Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense electronics company, has secured four contracts with the Romanian military to upgrade helicopters, provide electronic warfare technology, deliver systems to support search and rescue operations, and supply avionics suites for training aircraft. This announcement comes after Elbit Systems signed two other deals with European customers in early March, including one with Romania to supply unmanned turrets, remote weapon stations, and mortar systems. Elbit Systems has a proven track record of successful projects with the Romanian Armed Forces, having been previously contracted to upgrade helicopters and aircraft. However, the company declined to comment on the value of the contracts, and Romania’s Defense Ministry did not provide any details.
Addressing Security Concerns
Reports suggest that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a driving factor for Romania’s procurement efforts. Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed that two Romanian Air Force’s MiG-21 LanceR Aircraft were redirected to the Northern area of Romania in February, following the detection of a missile fired by Russia that crossed over into Moldova, Romania’s neighbor, and came within 22 miles of the Romanian border. Additionally, NATO deployed airborne warning and control system aircraft to Romania in January.
One of the contracts that Elbit Systems signed is for the Spectro XR electro-optical system, which will be used to equip Romania’s IAR 330 Puma helicopters used for maritime operations. The contract work will take place over the next year, following a successful upgrade of the Romanian Navy’s IAR helicopters. The Spectro XR system provides imaging capabilities in both daytime and nighttime conditions and offers continuous target scanning capabilities to enhance situational awareness.
